Literature Text

I prayed for them.

"Since the day indentured servants became permanent to the day slaves in the Southern states were freed, the United States hasn't let up its segregation. Sure, there were some integrated couples and abolitionists of unequal civil rights, but it made no difference. Integration was frowned upon in schools, parks, restaurants, swimming pools, movie theaters; literally everywhere! But then, in the newspaper, the first story I read, "The Freedom Riders," I wasn't sure if it was real. Whites AND Negroes, riding on a Greyhound bus, going to cities in states notorious for segregation. When I told my mom, both of us smiled. Not in the fact that they'll fail, but in the fact that segregation may finally come to an end."
